My question about the statistics is, Why does Oman have no burglary to speak of?Perhaps the US can take a lesson from this country and culture so as to lower the unusually high rates of burglary that we have in our own country. One in six homes is quite a high number when you stop and think about it. I live in an urban neighborhood and there are seven homes on one side of my block. That means, of the fourteen homes on either side of the street here, about two will be the target for burglary. Because I have lived here for a long time, I happen to know that at least one home across the street alone was targeted twice in the past few years. The family that owned that home had to move after the second break in because they felt they were specifically targeted, and most of the other neighbors thought it was because of the teenage daughter and her hoodlum friends, and most of us took extra precautions after that. My household, for instance, installed locking windows and put our lights on a timer, plus started to pay a friend’s daughter to stay over while we were on vacation. We also took action on our dream of owning a dog. Most of us thought that when the family across the street moved out that this may not be the end, and a lot of times neighbors will call us to report if there are suspicious vehicles on the block or if they have noticed someone new on the street regularly that does not seem to live nearby. This article confirmed my feelings that even though I live in a decent neighborhood that burglary really can happen. Considering that the people who live just on my block are much more on guard even five years after our neighbor moved out who had been burgled twice says a lot about the fear and anxiety that a burglary causes.

Its hardware prices are not the lowest—that honor goes to SimpliSafe—but they’re reasonable, especially compared with SmartThings ADT and Nest. Ring Alarm’s professional monitoring plan, at $10 per month or $100 per year, is less expensive than other plans by $10 to $20 per month. If you don’t need professional monitoring, you can self monitor the system free. Ring Alarm also includes a Z Wave radio chip that a Ring spokeswoman confirmed allows you to use Ring Alarm as a smart home hub for compatible Z Wave lights, switches, locks, and more. Ring Alarm preorders will ship July 3, 2018. Smartest Smart Home Option Honeywell Smart Home Security System Starter kit cost: $500 Total hardware cost: $1,100 The new Honeywell DIY system is the second most expensive option behind Nest Secure, but it offers far more value. The system’s base station doubles as a security camera, with facial recognition and two way audio, and a smart speaker with built in Amazon Alexa. Honeywell told us that it’s also working to add Google Assistant, giving you two virtual assistants to choose from, as well as integration with Apple HomeKit devices. Like Ring Alarm, Honeywell’s system also includes Z Wave to connect third party Z Wave smart home products. With this roster of integrations, the Honeywell Smart Home Security System could connect to dozens of smart home devices. And it will run on the same app Honeywell built for its Lyric thermostats and security cameras.

But much the same is true for books on child raising, another very complex subject, which has been far more extensively studied. There does seem to be universal agreement that for dogs as well as for children, preventing behavior problems is best achieved through rewards for desired behavior, rather than punishment for undesired behavior. Of course, different dog/owner teams may require different sorts of methods, just as different parent/child 'teams' may need different approaches towards child raising. There are about 53 million dogs in the US, and about a million dog bites reported each year, with perhaps three times that number unreported, and about twenty percent requiring medical attention. Unneutered dogs account for about eighty percent of all bites and nearly 100 percent of serious maulings; 87 percent of all biting dogs are male CDC and HSUS. Of course, human beings are far more dangerous than dogs are, by any reasonable statistical measure. There are about five times as many people as dogs in the US; dogs kill about 15 people per year, humans about 22,000; and there are over 10 million violent crimes per year, about fifty percent resulting in significant injury. And people kill about 5 million dogs per year. 144 Algonquin Road, Barrington Hills, IL 60010 8602, 847 428 7155, FAX 847 428 0610.
